If you have recently purchased a classic bike from Europe, or you are planning to import one, getting it properly registered in the UK can feel like a daunting task. The good news is to register motorcycle from EU to UK, the process has become more straightforward than many people expect — and CarsImport UK can handle the heavy lifting for you.
Why Import a Classic Bike from the EU?
Europe is home to some of the finest classic bikes in the world — from vintage Italian Ducatis Moto Guzzis and Vespa, to classic German BMWs and French Peugeots. Whether you are a collector, a restorer, or simply looking for a well-preserved machine at a better price than the UK market offers, importing from the EU is an increasingly popular choice.
However, once your bike arrives in the UK, it needs to be legally registered before you can ride it on public roads.
Step 1 — Customs Clearance
The first step is clearing your bike through UK customs. This involves submitting a import declaration to HMRC and paying any import duty and VAT owed on the vehicle.
If you are a private individual relocating to the UK and bringing your personal bike with you, you may qualify for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, allowing you to import the bike tax free. If you are purchasing a classic bike from the EU as a private acquisition, import charges will apply based on the vehicle’s value.
CarsImport UK handles customs clearance on your behalf, typically within 24–48 working hours.
Step 2 — NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrivals)
Once your bike has cleared customs, it must be declared on the NOVA system — the HMRC database that records all vehicles arriving in the UK. This is a legal requirement and must be completed before the bike can be registered with the DVLA.
NOVA confirms to HMRC that the vehicle has arrived in the UK and that all applicable taxes have been accounted for. CarsImport UK submits the NOVA application on your behalf as part of our standard service.
Step 3 — Dating Certificate (for Classic Bikes)
This is a step that is specific to classic bikes and often surprises first-time importers. If your bike is old enough to be considered a historic vehicle — generally over 40 years old — you may need a dating certificate from the relevant bike owners club or manufacturer’s register.
A dating certificate confirms the age and authenticity of the vehicle, which is important for DVLA registration purposes and can also determine whether the bike qualifies for historic vehicle status, which comes with significant benefits:
- Exempt from MOT testing
- Exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax)
- Eligible for historic vehicle insurance rates
For well-known marques, dating certificates are typically issued by the relevant owners club — for example, the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC) in the UK covers a wide range of classic and vintage bikes.
💡 Not sure whether your bike qualifies as a historic vehicle or which club to approach for a dating certificate? Get in touch with CarsImport UK, and we will point you in the right direction.
Step 4 — MOT Test (if applicable)
If your classic bike does not qualify for historic vehicle exemption — meaning it is under 40 years old — it will need a valid MOT certificate before it can be registered and taxed in the UK.
The MOT for bikes covers brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and emissions where applicable. Make sure the bike is in roadworthy condition before booking the test to avoid delays.
If the bike is over 40 years old and qualifies as a historic vehicle, it is MOT exempt — though we always recommend keeping your classic bike well maintained regardless.
Step 5 — DVLA Registration and UK Number Plates
With customs clearance, NOVA, and MOT (or dating certificate for historic vehicles) all in place, you can apply to the DVLA to register the bike and receive a UK registration number. You will need to submit:
Once the DVLA approves the application, your bike will be issued a V5C logbook and you can fit UK number plates. Your classic bike is now fully road legal in the UK.
How Long Does the Process Take?
- Customs clearance: 24–48 working hours
- NOVA registration: a few working days
- Dating certificate: varies depending on the owners club — allow extra time
- MOT (if required): same day
- DVLA registration and UK plates: most cases completed within 3 weeks from start
